Board of Directors Information

Board members are visionary stewards, shaping a sustainable future for the organization through ethical, legal, and thoughtful governance and financial leadership. They champion the mission by ensuring the nonprofit has the resources and guidance it needs to make a meaningful impact.

Purpose:
The Board of Directors provides leadership, strategic direction, and oversight to Alas PHX, ensuring the fulfillment of its mission, financial stability, and compliance with legal and ethical standards.

Alas PHX's mission to prevent exploitation and trafficking by building skills and relationships. Our vision is to equip individuals and organizations with the tools to achieve self-sufficiency and resilience, ensuring long-term security and stability for those most at-risk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Oversight: Shape and uphold the mission, vision, and goals.
  • Financial Responsibility: Approve budgets and ensure financial health.
  • Governance: Attend meetings, ensure legal and ethical compliance, and approve policies.
  • Advocacy & Fundraising: Promote the mission and support fundraising efforts.
  • Executive Support: Hire, support, and evaluate the Executive Director; assist with leadership succession.

Board Roles

  • Chairperson: Leads meetings, ensures governance, and appoints committee chairs.
  • Vice-Chairpersons: Step in for the Chairperson as needed.
  • Secretary: Maintains records and ensures legal compliance.
  • Treasurer: Oversees finances and leads the Finance Committee.
  • Expert Advisory Members (non-voting members with opportunity for possible transition to voting member role)

Expectations

  • Attend all meetings and contribute to 5 hours/month.
  • Represent the organization professionally.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Term & Compensation

  • 3-year term, renewable.
  • Volunteer position.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to the mission.
  • Strong communication and decision-making skills.
  • Diverse professional expertise across nonprofit governance, finance, law, social services, and healthcare fields.
  • Lived experience as part of at-risk populations and/or survivor of exploitation and/or trafficking.
